The Fearless Art Practice of Leilah Babirye
Step inside Leilah Babirye’s studio, and see how she fearlessly transforms wood, ceramic, and found materials into ambitious sculptures that reflect her LGBTQ+ community. Born in Kampala, Uganda, and based in Brooklyn, New York, contemporary artist Leilah Babirye is known for her highly expressive, ambiguously gendered sculptures. Featuring interviews with the artist and Curator of African Art Natasha Becker, this short documentary explores Leilah Babirye’s artistic process, connections to art from west and central Africa, and new work for Leilah Babirye: We Have a History.
The film, directed by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s Khamisi Norwood, is part of our original documentary series FAMSF Presents.

About the Exhibition
Born in Kampala, Uganda, and based in New York, Leilah Babirye is known for her highly expressive, ambiguously gendered sculptures in ceramic, wood, and discarded objects. Reclaiming ceramic and wood-carving traditions from western and central Africa, she hand builds her ceramics, firing them with expressive glazes, while she whittles, scorches, and burnishes her wood sculptures. As a final touch, she adorns them with wire, bicycle chains, inner tubes, and other found metals and materials. The sculptures, which range in scale from towering totemic forms to busts, talismans, and masks, are portraits of her LGBTQ+ community. Babirye’s work speaks to the power of reclaiming personal and cultural identity through artistic practices, historical narratives, and cultural traditions. This exhibition, the artist’s first solo museum show in the United States, highlights the connection between past and present that is at the heart of our Contemporary African Art program.

In "Sonic Blossom," a singer approaches visitors to offer the gift of a song selected from the Schubert lieder (songs written for one voice). Lee Mingwei listened to this music with his mother while caring for her after heart surgery in 2012. If a visitor accepts this offer of beauty and solace, the singer then serenades them. This ongoing participatory performance is part of the exhibition "Le...

Anne Boleyn was an important influence on Tudor style, as the presenter mentions. Henry VII built Richmond and a few other places, like a chapel within Westminster Abbey, but he was fairly frugal and didn’t go over the top with spending. Henry VIII was a spendthrift definitely, but his early reign was mainly spending money on wars. Anne and the annulment of his first marriage focused his energy more in England, and he acquired Hampton Court and York Place (renamed Whitehall) with the fall of Cardinal Wolsey and Henry and Anne were very involved in their redesign and expansion. Anne was actually better travelled than Henry. He only ever travelled within England and in France. Anne was brought up in the courts in the Low Countries, then in France and if you go to places where she stayed at, you can see those architectural influences in what she and Henry were building in England. So yes, the early Tudor style, which was when the majority of the building in the Tudor era was, would have been an eclectic melange of styles from continental Europe and England., thanks in large part to Anne. The presenter mentions four things the Tudors valued in terms of items they acquired… I would also add another one… self promotion. The Tudors were obsessed with placing their initials, symbols, badges, coats of arms, emblems, mottos everywhere, from the walls, the windows, the paintings, the clothing and even their jewellery. They wanted everyone to know who owned what, who their ruler was, and present a calculated image of splendor, power and magesty to their people, and abroad.

I just started this video. This lady has said the word.. Uhm. Ten thousand times in 2 minutes. I cannot. I simply can’t. If you are that nervous to talk at a podium.. I can’t listen. I stopped the video. No matter how amazing the subject maybe. It could not have been a worse introduction. Awful.

Why is the Italian narrator wearing lipstick? Guess we'll have women wearing mustaches whilst speaking of art soon enough... oh wait, there's a painting of Salome chopping the head off John the Baptist!..😅 these people of middle ages AND Renaissance were sadistic. They want us to think of the Renaissance as enlightened?... the artists working for these same dictators and murderous popes is not enlightening either, to say the least.

Stella's early paintings were historic and great. But after he got famous, his work went downhill and ceased to be meaningful, but became mere decoration. However, art always has had decorative qualities. So I don't know if that counts.

I think he is muddling Rudolf with Mikhail Baryshnikov. Rudolf was already a rising star dancing danseur noble roles in the Soviet Union. Baryshnikov was a good two or three inches shorter than Rudolf and struggled to get the classical roles in Russia.
